They’re found in high-altitude mountain and bamboo forests – sometimes at elevations of 4,000m – where they mainly eat leaves, shoots and stems.

These great, glorious, fur-coated apes are some of our closest relatives. Sadly we may also be their biggest threat. People have been pushing into the mountain gorilla’s forests in central Africa for decades – now there are only about 1000 of these splendid beasts in the wild.

Mountain gorillas generally live in groups of several females with their young and usually one dominant adult male – known as a ‘silverback’ because of the patch of silver hair on his back and hips.

The main threat to gorillas is people and the associated increasing pressure on the gorilla's habitat. With so few individuals in the wild the mountain gorilla is listed as critically endangered. The good news is, their numbers have recently been rising. It’s not too late for us to protect our mighty mountain cousins.

There is never a good time to say goodbye to an animal we love with all our heart. It is heartbreaking and made doubly difficult because our pain and grief isn't recognised as it would be for a human companion.

By attending this workshop, you will find out what the animal's think and feel about illness, palliative care, end of life, and transition.

You will practice communicating with visiting guest animal teachers and also animals in-spirit, to ask them your questions about how best to support them during long illness, end of life, transition and the afterlife.

This is a comforting and moving day, providing the space and love for everyone to be able to acknowledge animal loss, grieve their dearest animal friends, and communicate with animals on life, loss and love.

Pre-requisite: Attendance at a beginners workshop with Pea or another reputable animal communicator.

At the Great Bear Rainforest, we all had to dress

At the Great Bear Rainforest, we all had to dress in our ultra fashionable waterproofs to go out into the open ocean, to explore and perhaps encounter whales on our final morning.

And wow were there whales 🐋 waiting for us!

Three or four humpback whales were directly in our path breaching, over and over again for 15-20 minutes.

We sat their mesmerised, hearts opening even more - if that was even possible - and so, so grateful. These humpbacks bidding us farewell on the final day.

Celebrating.

It’s hard to put into words how special these interactions feel. I know some may dismiss them as chance or coincidence, but when you are there and when you know what has gone before with the humpbacks, you know this is them communicating.

It would be awful to dismiss their intentional interaction, ignorant on our human part, especially when we know in our hearts the truth is the Humpbacks have been with us this entire retreat. They are conscious and connected even when we struggle to be this ourselves. Perhaps by entering into more silence and stillness we can all find it easier to be conscious and connected too.

As humans we can tune in and connect to other species and intentionally express our feelings to them. Many of us already do. And this number is increasing day by day as Interspecies Communication becomes more widely understood and experienced.

Note: Indy (dog) came out with our group and loved being at the front of the boat.

Why are vultures important?

As nature’s clean-up crew, vultures play a vital role in the environments in which they live. Their scavenging behaviour helps keep ecosystems healthy and likely reduces the spread of disease.

By efficiently consuming animal carcasses, vultures can also eliminate the need to collect and transport livestock carcasses to processing plants, saving us millions of euros in waste management every year and hundreds of thousands of tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Essentially, vultures provide free ecosystem services that benefit nature and society as a whole!

But, even though they are so important, vultures are often overlooked and misunderstood. They need all the help they can get when it comes to their reputation.

The International Vulture Awareness Day 2023 (IVAD) helps promote the importance of vultures and the vital work carried out by conservationists to preserve these majestic birds.

What is International Dog Day?

International Dog Day is a special celebration of all dogs around the world and the companionship and loyalty that they show to us.

International Dog Day raises awareness, too, of the significance of rescuing our furry friends, as there are so many dogs in the world that are in need of a stable home, and a loving family.

The day can act as a gentle reminder for us to try and help these exceptional animals where we can.

Sadly, many rescue centres and dog shelters are fit to burst with abandoned dogs, often for reasons through no fault of their own.

Although it’s not a decision to be taken lightly - pups, and training and looking after a ‘new best friend’ can be a lot of work! - rescuing instead of buying from a pet store or a breeder can be so, so rewarding.

Why Save The Elephants?

Elephants are Africa’s gardeners and landscape engineers, planting seeds and creating habitat wherever they roam.

Without urgent action to save their species, elephants could disappear from the wild within a single generation. Approximately 100,000 elephants in Africa were killed for their ivory in just three years between the years 2010 & 2012.

An insatiable lust for ivory products in the Asian market makes the illegal ivory trade extremely profitable, and has led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of African elephants.

Bull elephants with big tusks are the main targets and their numbers have been diminished to less than half of the females.

Female African elephants have tusks and are also killed, which has a terrible effect on the stability of elephant societies, leaving an increasing number of orphaned baby elephants.

There are still more African elephants being killed for ivory than are being born . . . elephant populations continue to decline.

Why Do We Celebrate Lion Day?

As I sit here, penning these words, my heart aches for the plight of the lions. These majestic creatures, once prolific across Africa and Asia, now face the looming threat of extinction. It is for this reason that we celebrate World Lion Day. It is a day to raise awareness of their plight, to find ways to protect their natural habitats, and to educate those living near them on how to live in harmony with these remarkable animals.

In 1975, there were an estimated 200,000 lions in the wild. Due to a combination of poaching, disease, and habitat loss, that number is now only around 20,000 lions left in the wild. Compared to the 415,000 African elephants still roaming free, these numbers are shockingly low. One of the biggest threats facing lions is the commercialisation of their captivity. According to Panthera, human-lion conflicts are 95% of the threat to the lion population.

In South Africa alone, as many as 10,000 lions are bred and kept in captivity in approximately 350 facilities. They are often bred for commercial purposes, such as cub petting, volun-tourism, lion bone trade, live exports, and canned hunting. Many of the lions used for petting end up in the canned hunting industry.
