Join one of the world’s most loved and acclaimed animal communicators, Pea Horsley, on this unforgettable Indonesian Animal Communication Retreat – a classic ‘phinisi’ explorer yacht provides the best way to discover Indonesia’s largest protected area of marine biodiversity – named the ‘last paradise on earth.

This private live-aboard retreat is suitable for adventurous travellers and avid snorkelers. The voyage offers much more than just a luxury cruise experience of North and Central Raja Ampat, it is an unparalleled expedition that sails around the Dampier Strait up to the stunning Wayag Islands over 8 days and 7 nights.

Crossed by the equator, the unique archipelago of Raja Ampat is known as the Amazon of the Oceans, and has earned the prized Crown Jewel of Indonesia award as a global center of marine biodiversity and one of the most noteworthy ecological niches on the planet, on a par with the Great Barrier Reef and the Galápagos.

Home to the world’s largest manta ray sanctuary and known for one of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world, Raja Ampat is home to oceanic manta rays and reef manta rays, and 75% of all hard coral species worldwide. There are also dugongs, black tip reef sharks, wobbegongs, the ‘walking’ shark, mobula rays, stingrays, hawksbill turtles, green sea turtles, pygmy seahorses, and a staggering 1,400 species of fishes. You may also encounter the indo-pacific dolphin and bottlenose dolphin.

Raja Ampat boasts lush rain forests, wild mangroves, sandy islands and gorgeous beaches.

Day 1 – Arrive into Sorong (Fri 20 Nov)

Land at 6.15am into Sorong international airport (airport code SOQ) in West Papua, the gateway to the Raja Ampat Islands and starting point for your luxury cruise of Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, an archipelago located off of the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula Southwest Papua province. Make your own way to the Aston Spa hotel and check straight into your room which is waiting for you. Then rest, refresh and relax by the outdoor pool, have lunch, book a treatment at the spa, or stretch our those muscles in the gym and fitness centre. This is an important rest day to decompress from your long flight in readiness for the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. We will come together at 3pm for a Meet-and-Greet, Intention Setting, and Guided Grounding Opening Meditation and Communication, followed by supper together, before turning in for our first night in West Papua.

The wilderness retreat with Pea was a stunning step into nature and peace. Pea demonstrated her enormous talent for animal communication which was quite magnificent to witness. The retreat, with multiple taxi's, plane journeys, boat trips plus restaurant and hotel reservations was executed professionally. Extremely well run and without a hitch.

- Una, Canada

Day 2 – Embarkation – Waisai – Saonek Island  (Sat 21 Nov)

After breakfast, you receive a private transfer to the port to embark on your Raja Ampat cruise. A welcome drink greets you followed by crew introductions, and your cruise director provides a briefing on safety precautions and detailed itinerary. Settle into your cabin as you begin the journey north to Waisai (5-6 hours). The adventure starts with an opportunity for a first snorkel for possible encounters with Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin, Clownfish, Balloonfish, Parrotfish, Angelfish, Butterflyfish, Groupers, Snapper, Schools of jacks, Barracuda, Blacktip reef sharks, Green turtles, Hawksbill turtles, Stingrays, Sea stars, and more. If time allows, there will be additional chances to explore the underwater world or take an island walk. After sunset, the day concludes with your first supper under the stars and Sharing Circle, marking the end of this magical day. Overnight: Anchor at Saonek Island.

The Raja Ampat archipelago in Indonesia is considered to be the global epicenter of marine biodiversity on our planet. It is also a glowing conservation success story.

- National Geographic

Day 3 – Frewin – Mioskon (Sun 22 Nov)

Today we travel to Frewin for enjoyable snorkels at Frewin Wall and Frewin Slope. Start your day with sunrise yoga or a quiet journal practice, followed by snorkelling adventures. After lunch we sail to Mioskon Island, known as the island with Bats, snorkelling for encounters with Yellow Snapper, Napoleon Wrasse, big Groupers, Wobbegong Sharks, Bumphead parrotfish,  Schools of Jacks and Fusiliers, Pygmy Seahorses, Sea Turtles, and different species of nudibranch. Mioskon Bay is a spectacular spot where you can snorkel in the mangroves or take turns to kayak on mirrored waters along the verdant coastline. The beach will be set up for relaxation for you to deepen your nature connection and guided communication practice with Pea. Overnight: Anchor at Mioskon Island.

A trip with Pea will always be beyond your wildest dreams. The places she chooses are magical. The people she gathers are among the most caring and compassionate I've ever met. You will come back a better you.

- Jenny

Day 4 – Mansuar – Cape Kri – Yanbeser Jetty (Mon 23 Nov)

We travel to the east side of Mansuar Island and Cape Kri. At dawn, you set off hoping for a sighting of the elusive Red Bird of Paradise. Embark on a mindfulness jungle hike to a bird-watching platform, offering a chance to spot these birds among various other species. After breakfast and rest, you can also snorkel at Yanbeser Jetty, with an optional visit to the eco-town. In the afternoon, we patiently wait in hope of a rare sight of Dugongs at Dugong Reef, this large marine mammal is known as the gentle sea cow (their closest living relatives on the land are actually elephants) and there could be schools of Fishes, beautiful Corals, and many other marine species. Pea will invite you into communication and to share your experience during Sharing Circle. Overnight: Anchor near Yanbeser Jetty.

Pea and her team were so kind, loving, approachable and knowledgeable! I came back with an even greater love for and stronger connection with Mother Nature and the animals. And with a stronger appreciation for life itself and all it has to offer.

- Sybille

Day 5 – Arborek – Yangefo Passage (Tues 24 Nov)

Today you explore the waters near Arborek Island, where the majestic Manta Rays gather to feed on the plankton-rich waters brought in by the tides of the Dampier Strait. You spend time snorkelling at Manta Sandy or Manta Ridge keeping an eye out for manta rays performing a wonderful underwater ballet. There may be an option to include Arborek Jetty, famous for the huge schools of fish that shelter beneath it, and also for the colourful soft corals that cover its piles, or an optional visit to Arborek village. After a delicious lunch on board, you move to Yangefo Passage for gentle paddleboarding or kayaking among the Mangroves, a grounding and resilient spirit. Mangroves are also ecologically important because they protect coastal shorelines from the force of tidal waves, hurricanes, and tsunamis. This glorious day ends with supper, sunset watching and Sharing Circle. Overnight: Vessel travels north across the equator to Wayag.

What a glorious way to play and explore, to expand and release, to heal and grow!! This was a soft and intense journey of the heart as we grew stronger with the adventure and yet tendorized by the wild spirits. A tremendous choice, I am so grateful.

- Désirée, Bahamas

Day 6 – Iconic Wayag (Wed 25 Nov)

We anchor early in Wayag, the crown jewel of Raja Ampat, a picturesque uninhabited haven, 10 km north of the equator. This collection of karst islands defines the beauty of Raja Ampat and is the most iconic site in the archipelago – the beach is set up and we play here all day! For the fit and fearless there is an optional 6am strenuous climb-scramble up to Island Peak for a stunning viewpoint. There’s plenty to discover here, it’s a day full of experiences in a stunning setting. Wayag is an ideal destination for kayaking or stand-up paddling in the calm waters surrounded by many shades of blue or relaxing on the beach, connecting and communicating with the islands. You can also take a speedboat tour exploring around the islands. After lunch we hope to encounter Sharks. The day comes to an end with canapés and drinks at sunset, followed by a beach vegetarian/vegan BBQ supper and Sharing Circle. Overnight: Vessel travels south across the equator to Piaynemo.

Please note: The hike is challenging. It has no trail, no safety bars, no ropes, and 45-degree steep sharp rock scrambling on all fours. We suggest that this is limited to those who have good stamina and no fear of heights. You will need hiking shoes, gloves, hat and long trousers to protect from scratches or bumps. There is a gentler alternative on Day 7.

This last paradise on earth really is a paradise. Its remoteness makes it even more special. I have never seen anything this beautiful before. It was a once in a lifetime trip!

- Isabell

Day 7 – Piaynemo (Thurs 26 Nov)

Piaynemo is a small cluster of breathtakingly beautiful islands and famous for its iconic viewpoint known as “Piaynemo Island or Hill.” Start the day with a 300-step trailed hike to the top of Piaynemo Hill to witness a breathtaking panoramic view of the turquoise waters, karst islets, and lush green islands that make up the archipelago. You are now at the Western tip of Central Raja Ampat, featuring some of the most spectacular shallow coral gardens globally, including the famous Melissa Garden, populated by a variety of marine life, including sea turtles, majestic manta rays, and schools of fishes. After lunch there is another snorkelling opportunity at Keruo Channel or My Reef or relax onboard. 6 PM: Canapés, cocktails, and supper while underway to Waisai (Sapokren).

Pea made certain that we were so well taken care of at ALL times, physically, emotionally, spiritually ❤️ I highly recommend it as it will stay in my heart for always. I found my courage to get me there and I'm SOOOO glad I had this wonderful experience.

- Elaine

Day 8 – Waisai – Kilibiru (Fri 27 Nov)

After anchoring early in Waisai, you have an optional early morning birdwatching activity for possible sightings of the Twelve Wired Bird-of-Paradise and maybe even the Cuscus, before breakfast at 8am. By midday enjoy a short river tour and forest walk to the Blue River (crystal-clear freshwater) located in Warsambin Village. In the past, this Kalibiru was one of the sacred places of the Mayalibit Tribe to soak or bathe before fighting to become stronger in the face of war. There is another legend that there is a white crocodile living in this Kalibiru river who appears if someone violates local customary law. Local people also call this river by the name of Waiyal. Wai means “water”, while Yal means “know what will happen tomorrow”. This is a good place to invite communication with the spirit of the water and ancestors. Tourists are not allowed to swim in springs close to Kalibiru to maintain the sanctity of water and as a form of respect for ancestors. After a cool refreshing dip, return to the yacht for lunch before sailing back to Sorong (5–6 hours) with time to sunbathe or soak in your experience before our final Sharing Circle in the afternoon. In the evening, we share dinner and enjoy a farewell party with the crew. Overnight: Sorong.

I loved the retreat!!! This was my first time to join Pea's retreat, and I would love to join again. I had a tendency to not feel part of any 'group' but with Pea's pod I felt part of it very quickly and felt comfortable. I'm honoured to be part of this retreat and loved sooo many parts of the experience.

- Yuko, Bahamas

Day 9 – Sorong – Disembarkation (Sat 28 Nov)

We will arrive early into Sorong around 5am, after a final decadent breakfast on the deck, the crew will assist you in disembarking and transfer you to the airport to catch your flight home (or local hotel if staying on.) Say final farewells with new found friends after a breathtaking shared adventure. The retreat will finish at Sorong airport or port depending upon your onward travel plans. You will have enough time to catch the 8.15am Garuda flight Sorong-Jakarta. Latest disembarkation is 10am.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.

- Jacques Yves Cousteau

Please note: This schedule is subject to change based on weather, sea conditions, and other unforeseen factors. While we strive to provide the best possible experience, we cannot guarantee 100% visibility of the species, as their presence is influenced by natural conditions beyond our control.

Important: Pea will provide some intuitively led interspecies communication sessions, but there will be no formal workshop teaching on this retreat. You are advised to complete Pea’s online course or read her book Animal Communication Made Easy beforehand in order to understand the necessary basics.

I am ready to go!

Aliikai – Queen of the Seas

Your 40-meter-long ‘phinisi’ sailing yacht, is ready to take you on a wonderful journey across Indonesia’s waters. With 2 masts and 7 sails totalling a sailing area of 450m², the yacht was meticulously crafted and refitted in 2020 by more than a dozen carpenters in South Sulawesi, providing a luxurious yet still informal ‘barefoot experience’.

At the core of your voyage is abundant space to connect and relax while immersed in a tailored Indonesian expedition. Great thought and attention to detail went into the design of the living areas to create inviting spaces that complement the awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Phinisi boats are stable and perform well in open waters. Their sturdy wooden hulls and distinctive hull shape combine stability with speed. The large gaff-rigged sails harness the wind’s power with a timeless grace.

Fully staffed by an experienced crew who have sailed Indonesia’s vast seas for decades, all Indonesian and English speaking, and highly trained for luxury cruises, ensuring peace of mind for you to enjoy a retreat of a lifetime – the crew’s professionalism and warmth are likely to be one of the highlights. A gifted chef will be onboard at all times to ensure each meal is a culinary experience rich with Indonesian fusion flavours.

We were really surprised when we arrived: the styling, the crew, everyone is so friendly, the rooms, the lounge, different spots to relax. We had sunsets, the food was good. The silence, the quietness, the stillness here is so beautiful, and the colour of the water.

- Irene

Folding glass doors open to the covered outdoor lounge and dining area for al fresco dining under the stars and space to relax on one of the comfortable day beds and sofas.

The indoor lounge and dining area is an air-conditioned multiple purpose space where you can enjoy a meal or relax while taking refuge from the midday sun.

Since stepping on this boat it has been nothing but luxury and fun times.

- William

My overall experience on the Aliikai boat was wonderful. There are some trips you take that are life changing and this was definitely one of them. I loved the experience of feeling like we were completely off the gird.

- Janine

The meals and service were exceptional and the team could not have done anything more to make the trip relaxing and enjoyable.

- Sydney

The upperdeck offers a mindful space for morning yoga, meditation and a relaxing lounge surrounded by the natural breeze. We will come together for Sharing Circle and you can enjoy the night stars while chatting with new friends.

Raja Ampat

For years, Raja Ampat was a well-guarded secret until National Geographic called it an “emerging Island Eden” in 2013. It is a special area, in the form of a karst archipelago that lies right on the equator. Its geological uniqueness is on an international scale, with the discovery of the oldest exposed rock in the world, aged 439 – 360 million years ago (Silur – Devonian) located in Misool.

The Raja Ampat archipelago, part of the Coral Triangle, is located at the northwest corner of Indonesia’s West Papua province, encompassing 40,000 km² of land and sea and including a series of more than 1,500 islands which surround the main islands –Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool.

Raja Ampat translates into English as Four Kings. The name comes from local mythology that tells about a woman who finds seven eggs. She brought them home, six of which hatched and became four boys, a girl, and a ghost, while one did not hatch and became a stone.

Later, the four boys became kings in Waigeo, Salawati, Misool, and Bantata. The girl got pregnant, but nobody knew to whom. The family felt shameful about it and to conceal it, her brother put her in a boat and drifted it out to sea. The boat reached Biak Island and the Biak’s king took her as his daughter.

It is said the stone egg still exists today and is kept in its original place in a house near the Waikeo River, wrapped in white fabric and covered by a curtain, it is worshipped by the local people.

Raja Ampat’s indigenous inhabitants consist of 12 indigenous tribes. One of them is Maya who come from the Gulf Mayalibit, they live in the jungle and in the mountains. They didn’t leave rural areas to live in coastal areas until the 19th century. Later, the Mayans inhabited Waigeo Island and their descendants still live in its rural areas.

Some locations of the retreat

It is not easy to get there, but when you are in the water, swimming with more fish, invertebrates, coral, than you knew existed you are in ecstasy. There are no words to describe the beauty and pristine water habitat. I have been many places in the world and nothing compares to Raja Ampat. If you can, and you love the ocean and its creatures, go!!

Conservation Efforts

Since 2004, 2,000,109 hectares of marine habitats around Raja Ampat have been designated Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

These areas are partly paid for by the tourist tag fee you pay when you visit Raja Ampat. This and the banning of fishing of many protected species have been huge steps in the preservation of Raja Ampat’s marine environments.

With the help of the government and law enforcement in these areas, Raja Ampat can be kept protected from overfishing, imbalances in the food chain, damage to coral, and many other issues that cause major damage to marine habitats.

Indonesia is one of the few places in the world where visitors can easily see both species of manta rays, the oceanic and reef varieties. The new legislation protects both.

Suitability

Sleeping onboard a yacht is like being gently rocked to sleep by the waves, often accompanied by the sounds of the ocean and the fresh air, providing a unique and peaceful sleep experience, especially when anchored in a beautiful location, but can also be affected by movement and potential noise depending on weather conditions and the size of the yacht.

On this retreat the yacht will anchor for the first three nights, then the vessel will move to a new location (due to the distance needed to be covered) over the next four nights.

Key points about sleeping on a yacht:
  • Gentle rocking motion: Most people find the natural sway of the boat to be soothing and sleep-inducing.
  • Sounds of the ocean: The lapping waves and occasional splashes can create a calming soundscape.
  • Fresh air: Open windows and portholes allow for a constant flow of fresh air.
  • Unique views: Waking up to breathtaking scenery like sunrise over the water or a starry night sky.
  • Potential challenges: Depending on weather conditions, the movement can be disruptive for some, and tight spaces in smaller yachts may feel cramped. Our yacht consists of staterooms, much larger than many vessels in Raja Ampat – you are able to stand up, move around, and there are no bunk beds!

You need to be able to:

  • Snorkel comfortably without direct assistance
  • Get in and out of a tender/dinghy
  • Have good mobility to navigate climbing ladders and a boat environment
  • Remain at sea for 8 days
  • Do not suffer from claustrophobia

Please note: This retreat may not be suitable if you have conditions that may require urgent medical assistance or are pregnant.

It is vital that everyone follows every instruction given by the Cruise Director, Snorkel Guide, and Crew. The boat crew are there to take care of your safety and will be knowledgeable about many factors of which you are unaware.

Our retreat allows you to fully let go and surrender to the experience, thanks to our professional and highly trained Indonesian crew who provide a high level of care, nourishment and safety at all times. However, we also expect you to not put yourself, or others by your own actions, at any risk.

Expectations

This is a luxury retreat in a raw and remote part of the world, cut off from immediate access to most modern amenities – although the yacht is very comfortable and provides a high level of service. Due to weather and factors beyond our control, the schedule and activities may need to be changed and wildlife encounters can not be guaranteed.

If you wish is to keep yourself separate from the group and treat this like your own personal holiday, this retreat is not a good fit for you. We experience, grow, and transform together.

The hikes and watersports are optional, you can remain onboard with the professional crew who will take care of you. In fact, on most days, if you feel you’d rather be still and miss one of the activities, that is also an option for you. You can lie back and relax on the sundeck instead or reflect on your values, goals, and dreams.

If you are in any doubt about your suitability for this retreat please make contact.

Wifi is complimentary at the hotel and onboard, where available. For a remote archipelago of scattered islands, Raja Ampat has fairly good mobile phone coverage. However, we wish you to focus on being off-grid and to embrace a deep nature immersion.

Yes, a limited number of single occupancy cabins are available on a first-come first-served basis. You receive all 8 nights in a private room: 1-night at the hotel and 7-nights in a cabin onboard.

Although malaria transmission rates are currently low in the Raja Ampat islands, wearing repellant and appropriate clothing to avoid bites is a must and anti-malarial medications are recommended. Please seek the advice of your health professional.

Yes. Avoiding harm from the dangerous smaller stuff  (or larger creatures) is as simple as don’t touch!

There’s lots of stuff to be wary of in the water. Virtually all of it is either small, well concealed or very pretty. Don’t be alarmed – if you’re sensible and take the advice of the snorkel guide you’ll be fine. Just like on safari in the wilds of Africa.

When dressing for a yacht, prioritise light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton, opting for comfortable pieces like swimsuits with coverups (kaftans, sorongs), flowy dresses, shorts, light blouses/shirts, and ensuring you have a hat and sunglasses to protect from the sun. The key is to choose comfortable, breathable fabrics and pieces that allow for movement. Flip flops for the beach, and if opting to hike, please bring hiking shoes.

On board it is a true barefoot experience. The barefoot rule for yachts and boats alike is an age-old practice made to keep the teak decks undamaged, and dirty soles away from the clean and sparkling floor. Commonly, shoes stay outside the cabin, and no shoes are worn on deck.

The yacht provides reef safe sun screen and after-sun lotions for your use.

If you prefer to bring your own brand and factor, please do not bring any sunscreens with AVOBENZONE or OXYBENZONE as an ingredient. Check your sunscreen under ‘ACTIVE ingredients’.

AVOBENZONE (also known as Parsol 1789, Eusolex 9020, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) creates bad stains on the boat, linens and your clothing which are very difficult to remove.

OXYBENZONE has been determined by ocean researchers to be problematic.

Please bring sunscreens where the active ingredient is either TITANIUM DIOXIDE and/or ZINC OXIDE.

Green People have sea-safe sunscreens available.

Travelling from one part to another can consume 8-10 hours of navigation, making it impractical for a resort-based retreat. Opting for a private yacht charter to explore Raja Ampat provides unmatched intimacy and flexibility. The yacht enables us to have a personalised itinerary, unveiling secluded sites away from the crowds.

Activities are not limited to the underwater world. The land has much to offer, and a cruise to Raja Ampat is the best way to take in all its beauty without wasting time in transport. An exclusive yacht guarantees privacy, tranquility, and a dedicated crew, transforming the Raja Ampat retreat into a meaningful and unforgettable adventure.

Having researched into many boats and cabin configurations that will be a great fit for our group I kept returning to the Aliikai. It provides the most comfortable and flexible options. This is not a mega-yacht or super-yacht, it is a traditional Indonesian style yacht with spacious boutique-esque cabins, there are no tight bunk beds in tiny cabins.

Our crew also meet animal welfare guidelines.

If you cannot arrive on board before the scheduled boat departure, we have no obligation to wait for you and your trip will be de facto cancelled and the cancellation policy applies. Animal Communication Retreats Ltd and Pea Horsley takes no responsibility for changes to any flight schedule (delay or cancellation) made directly by you or your agent.

A “barefoot luxury” yacht experience means a very high standard of comfort and service, but the atmosphere on board remains relaxed and convivial.
